China's Wood Products Ranking First in Asian Market
February 20, 2006
China's wood products feature high quality, low price and regional advantages and cater to the preferences of application in Asian countries. Therefore, they have won extensive favor from various countries in Asia. In terms of wood product export to Asian market, China has established her leading position outperforming such traditional wood product export countries as Indonesia and Malaysia, and such leading advantages are still growing.

In the 20th century, artificial board production and supply in Asian region mainly depended on such Southeastern countries as Indonesia and Malaysia. In the new century, China became an exporter instead of an importer for artificial board. Of the three board categories, plywood export accounts for higher than 90%. Within a few years, China's plywood has had dramatic influence in the Asian region.

In terms of flooring export, except flexible flooring in which China has not shaped her production scale, China-made solid wood flooring, solid wood laminated flooring, reinforced wood flooring and bamboo flooring have gained substantial market share in Asia. This is mainly attributable to the fact that China geared up with international market within a short cycle, won commendation from Asian importers for high quality in products and has advantages in price of China-made flooring. As a result, China has become a leading player in raw material import and product export.

In recent years, China is gradually becoming a large furniture producer and exporter. Though affected to some extent by the antidumping accusation from the U.S. furniture industry, China still maintains high-speed growth in furniture export. In the past, Asian countries mostly used locally made furniture and some developed countries and regions imported furniture from Europe and USA. In recent years, however, China has become a supply base exporting furniture to various countries in Asia. For neighboring countries such as Japan and South Korea, China has become their No.1 furniture supplier. For Southeastern countries such as Singapore, China-made furniture has large market share there.

Under identical conditions in quality, China-made decoration-purpose wood products feature advantages in price and thus have attracted many Asian countries. China-made wood construction materials have won extensive favor in these countries, including economically developed countries and developing countries as well. In turn, this dramatic demand substantially stimulates the growth of China's woodworking industry.

In a word, China-made artificial board, wood flooring, furniture and wood construction materials are expanding their export market share in the Asian region. We should seize this opportunity, make full use of international and domestic markets and resources and complete industrial restructure within the shortest possible time to improve the overall level of the woodworking industry and thus make China a leader in the woodworking industry.
