China features scarce forestry resources and irrational structure. Particularly, initiation of the Natural Forestry Resource Protection Project further aggravates timber shortage. There are many approaches to solve the issue of timber resources shortage and of these approaches, it is a rational solution to intensify efforts in developing timber substitution.
As shown by practice, one cubic meter of timber used to make artificial board can substitute three cubic meters of timber. In recent years, artificial board has found extensive applications in construction, production maintenance, transportation and water conservancy projects. With the rapid growth of the decoration industry, in particular, artificial board is playing an indispensable role. By 2005, China has completed and commissioned 450 high/medium density fiberboard production lines with total production capacity hitting 18.5 million cubic meters. Currently, China has become the largest medium density fiberboard producer and consumer.
Though China has witnessed high-speed growth in the artificial board industry and output, yet per capita share is no more than 0.014m3, which is quite low compared with per capita share in the world. In the next 15 years, such sectors in China as construction, furniture and decoration alone demand 30 million cubic meters of artificial board. By 2010, China has to turn out 35 million cubic meters of artificial board to satisfy social needs. |
