VietNamNet Bridge - Today, April 27, three Vietnamese telecommunications companies and 15 regional and international telecom firms signed an agreement on the construction and maintenance of the AAG sea optical cable system in Malaysia.
The three Vietnamese companies include the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), Viettel and Saigon Postel (SPT).
The AAG project has a total estimated capital of up to US$560 million, with the participation of 18 companies from countries in Southeast Asia and Asia - Pacific like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, the Philippines, the US and China?s Hong Kong.
Of the three Vietnamese firms, VNPT will contribute the highest sum of capital, $40 million, as a founding member.
The construction of this sea optical cable network will take 19 months. The system is scheduled to start operations in November 2008.
The AAG system has a designed capacity of 1.92 Tbps, six times more than the current international optical cable capacity of Vietnam. This is the first sea cable system that directly connects to Southeast Asia.
The current sea cable route that connects Southeast Asia and the US has to pass Japan, China and Taiwan. This route was recently hit by the earthquake in Taiwan and caused the Internet network in Asia break down.
