VietNamNet Bridge - A group of executives from Canada's information technology (IT) and telecom industries are in HCM City to scout for partnerships and investment opportunities.
The visit, supported by British Columbia State, is aimed at helping Canadian enterprises familiarise themselves with Vietnam, an emerging economy that recently became a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Also in the delegation are executives of the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) Venture Capital and the Monte Jade Science and Technology Association.
Frank Pho, managing director of BDC Venture Capital and an Overseas Vietnamese, said: "Six months ago I returned to Vietnam and was very surprised by the development, especially in the IT and telecom industries. It seems like China 10 years ago. It's a good time to invest."
The five companies represented on the delegation possess new technologies in internet protocol telephony, fixed mobile convergence, and health care.
Some Canadian telecom companies already have a presence in Vietnam -like Nortel, for instance, which entered in 1993 and now provides modern CDMA mobile technology to Hanoi Telecom.
Nortel also provides technologies to local outsouring software company TMA for processing some high-tech products.
Canadian Telesat signed a technical consultancy deal last week with Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group for its Vinasat satellite. The two companies have signed seven other contracts in the past.
BDC Venture Capital plans to back Canadian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) seeking to enter Vietnam.
The Canadian entrepreneurs, who arrived on April 1, will be in HCM City for four days.
They visited the Quang Trung Software City, the country's biggest software park, and met with the city's Post and Telematics Department.
