China to be the World's largest energy consumer?
May 7, 2007
At this year's annual session of National People's Congress (NPC, the national legislature) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC, the national political advisory board), automotive industry leaders asked the Chinese government to lead and support for energy saving and environmental improvement.

It is not surprised that energy saving and environmental protection have become the top concerns of industry leaders from the auto industry, since auto products are one of the country's greatest consumers of energy.

In his work report, Premier Wen, Jiabao declared that the country must be more energy-efficient and improve its environment quickly to safeguard long-term economic growth.

A forecast from the State Council Development and Research Centre indicates that by 2010, 61 percent of China's petroleum product (including gasoline and diesel) consumption will depend on imports, while the country's automobiles will account for about 43 percent of the country's total petroleum product consumption. By 2020, they are expected to increase to 76 and 57 percent, respectively.

China is currently the world?s third largest consumer of petroleum products and the second-largest consumer of energy. With its auto market projected to become the world's largest market by 2015, it is only a matter of time that China becomes the world's largest energy consumer.

Last month's Administrative Rules on the Productive Entry of Alternative Fuel Vehicles (draft for solicitation of comments) should be good news to these executives, or at least a good start. These Rules serve as policy guidance for industrialization of alternative fuel vehicles in China.
